Benchmark's Deputy Flyer wins Santa Anita debut

Awaiting room in midstretch, Deputy Flyer accelerated smoothly
once clear for a half-length victory in 1:08.80 defeating 10 other
Cal-breds in a 6-furlong $47,400 maiden special on December 28.
The Marsha Naify homebred posted an 89 Beyer.


Hollywood Park debut win for Bertrando 2-year-old

In a ground saving trip on the rail, Chalula One (pictured)
accelerated smoothly in the final sixteenth to win her
November 29 debut at six furlongs by nearly a length in
1:09.49 for owner/breeders Aury and Ralph Todd.

Foaled May 1, 2006 at River Edge Farm, Chalula One
was the first of two juvenile winners for Bertrando at
Hollywood Park over the Thanksgiving weekend.


Karelian remains undefeated at Churchill Downs
with a game dead heat victory in graded feature

Winner of the Sea O Erin Handicap at Arlington Park (pictured)
in July, Karelian was only defeated 2 1/2 lengths by Thorn Song
in the Shadwell Mile-G1 at Keeneland but avenged the loss by
defeating the son of Unbridled’s Son by more than 5 lengths in
the River City Handicap-G3 at Churchill Downs on November 22.
The 6-year-old son of Bertrando was won 8 of 16 starts, $347,548.

Tribal Chief sets new track record at Hollywood Park

Taking on open company at 7 furlongs as the 8-5 favorite, Tribal
Chief controlled the pace throughout, setting fractions of :22.64,
:44.74 and 1:08.14 defeating Cat Brulay (Storm Cat) by just over
a length, and setting a new track record 1:20.46. The first-crop son
of Tribal Rule has won 4 of 9 starts, $106,580.


Final Fling goes for $220,000 at Fasig-Tipton

Bertrando 3-year-old filly Final Fling, pictured winning the
Santa Ysabel Stakes-G3 earlier this year, sold for $220,000
at the November 2nd Selected Mixed Sale conducted by
Fasig-Tipton in Lexington, Kentucky.

The GI-placed winner of $180,814 out of stakes winner Lily
La Belle was consigned by Four Star Sales, Agent and
purchased by Adena Springs.


Benchmark colt leads gate to wire in ATBA Fall Sales Stakes

A 17-length wire-to-wire winner of his Oct. 3 trial race, Minnetonka
Mist broke on top and set fractions of 21.87, 44.17 and 56.27 on his
way to a 1:09.25 victory as the heavy favorite in the $84,330 ATBA
Fall Sales Stakes (colt div.) on October 18 at Turf Paradise. Winner
of three of four starts, the Benchmark juvenile owned by Connie
Phillips and trained by David Van Winkle, was a $23,000 yearling
purchase last fall from the River Edge Farm ATBA sale consignment.


Bertrando fillies 1-2 in October 18th co-feature at Turf Paradise

Battling for the lead throughout the six furlongs, favored Shelbydell
could not turn back the late charge of Bella Cardona (pictured) who
prevailed by a nose to win the $88,463 ATBA Fall Sales Stakes
(filly div.). The winner and second–place finisher were purchased
from River Edge Farm for $60,000 and $3,000 respectively at the
2007 ATBA Fall Sale. Congratulations to all the connections.


Tribal Chief takes Hawley wire-to-wire in “Legends”

Sandy Hawley and Tribal Chief “stole the show” in the “Living Legends”
race for eight Racing Hall of Fame jockeys at Oak Tree on October 18th.
Away from the races for nearly nine months, Tribal Chief went right to
the lead, controlling the pace with fractions of :22.93 and 45.26 then had
plenty left entering the stretch, winning the 7- furlong allowance/optional
claimer by 6 1/2 lengths in 1:21.03 as the 2.90-1 favorite. The 4-year-old
from the first crop of Tribal Rule has won three of eight starts, $76,160.


Gentle Romeo wins at Oak Tree in near record time

Coming off an 11-month layoff as the 3-1 favorite in his open company
debut on October 8th, Gentle Romeo set swift fractions of :22 2/5,
:44 2/5 and 1:08 to win by 2 1/4 lengths in time of 1:20 1/5 just
 2/5 shy of the 7-furlong track record of 1:19 4/5.

The full brother to G1 winner Silent Sighs ($442,700) and G2 winner
Proposed ($567,600) has won three of four starts and $100,060.


Tribesman wins Southern Cal debut

As the 5/2 favorite, Tribesman led from gate to wire in the
$150,000 California Cup Sprint Handicap, setting quick early
fractions of 21.76 and 44.36 then staying on well to turn back
the challenge of Grade I winner Johnny Eves and set a new
stakes record of 1:07.85 for the six furlongs.

The October 5th win was the eighth in 15 starts for the Tribal Rule
gelding who has earned $376,781 for owner/breeder Kjell Qvale.


Malia Sofia: 10th Stakes Winner for Tribal Rule

Coming off a July 27 Emerald Downs allowance win, Dan Agnew’s
homebred 3-year-old Malia Sofia was up in final strides to take the
$50,000 Sun Devil Stakes by a nose in 1:09.74 on October 4th.
It was her third consecutive victory and her first win for trainer Carol
Hubbard and jockey Anne Von Rosen.


Tribal Rule “Reigns Supreme” with $51,500 average

On September 30th, six Tribal Rule yearlings went through the “ring”
at California’s Fall Selected Yearling Sale and five sold, including
three of the six top-priced yearlings at the sale: Hip 130 purchased
by Sierra Sunset, LLC for $90,000; Hip 166 purchased by Dr. Mark
Dedomenico, LLC for $62,000; Hip 21 purchased by Bruno De Berdt,
agent for $60,000, in addition to Hip 208 purchased by Kathy Walsh
for $42,000. The five yearlings grossed $257,500 for an average of
$51,500, the highest among stallions with two or more yearlings sold.


No catching Tribal Rule’s 3-time stakes winner
Tribesman in his seventh wire-to-wire victory

As the 6-5 favorite Tribesman won the $75,000 California State
Fair Sprint Handicap at Sacramento on August 30 by 4 1/2 lengths
in 1:07.61, just missing the track record set in 1993 by one-hundredth
of a second.

Yearling purchase from River Edge Farm’s
2007 Barretts consignment wins debut at Del Mar

Purchased for $62,000 by Robert and Betty Irwin, Salty Sarah
closed with a rush to win her career debut, a $53,400 Cal-bred
maiden special weight on August 10 for trainer Thomas Bell II.
The 2-year-old daughter of Bertrando out of stakes-placed
Bonneville is a full sister to Deputy Bertrando.


“No Contest” stakes victory for She’s Outrageous

Ten lengths clear entering the stretch, She’s Outrageous
won the Spicy Handicap on August 9 under a hand ride
by 15 1/2 lengths. The $33,470 race at 1 1/16 miles was her
second stakes win in three starts this year. One of five stakes
winners from Tribal Rule’s first crop, She’s Outrageous has
earned $108,177 for owner/breeder Wafer Thoroughbred Ranch.


Progeny earnings of $3,001,516 for Tribal Rule’s
first two crops to race

For statistics through August 5, 2008, Tribal Rule had sired
66 starters, 44 winners of 102 races (19% wins from starts),
nine stakes winners, including Grade I winner Georgie Boy,
and seven stakes-placed from his first and second crops.


Benchmark fillies Smooth Performer and
Chimera Star score Del Mar wins as favorites

Favored against older fillies and mares in her Del Mar debut
on August 2nd, three-year-old Smooth Performer (pictured)
was much the best in a $63,800 allowance/optional claimer on
the main track at 1 1/16 miles. Defeated by just a head in the
Hollywood Oaks-G2, Smooth Performer has earned $142,600
for owner/ breeders John Spohler and Martin J. Wygod.

Another promising 3-year-old, Chimera Star earned her diploma
at Del Mar on August 4th as the short-priced favorite, winning a
$53,000 California-bred maiden special by two lengths in 1:10.95
for owner/breeders Clark and Janine Hansen.


Kentucky-bred son of Bertrando wins
$150,000 turf feature

Coming off four consecutive “bullet” works at Keeneland, Karelian
(pictured) won the 8-furlong Sea O Erin Handicap at Arlington Park,
July 26th by three-quarters of a length in his first start since an
allowance victory at Saratoga 11 months earlier.

Tribal Rule colt sells for $80,000 at Fasig-Tipton

The only California-sired yearling catalogued for Fasig-Tipton’s
2008 Kentucky Selected Yearling Sale, the bay colt (Hip 349)
pictured was consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent for Stephen
Ferraro and purchased for $80,000 by “Buzz” Chace, agent.

 



Benchmark 2-year-old goes wire-to-wire in debut

Breaking on top, Minnetonka Mist set fractions of 22.63 and 45.85
on his way to a near 10-length score and final time of 58.32 for five
furlongs on the main track at Canterbury Park on July 10. The bay
colt out of Louisiana Flash was purchased as a yearling for $23,000
by owner Connie Phillips from River Edge Farm’s 2007 ATBA Fall
Mixed Sale consignment.



Tribal Rule joins California’s “Sire Elite”

With just three crops to race, Tribal Rule is listed among the top
five “Leading Lifetime Sires in California” ranked by Average-Earnings
Index. Statistics are through June 8, 2008 according to the July issue
of The California Thoroughbred.



Close Relatives: Da' Tara and Denis of Cork

In 1986, Martin J. Wygod purchased stakes winner Kaylem Ho for $32,000 at Keeneland's November Breeding Stock Sale. She produced eight foals for Wygod, including three stakes fillies bred in California by Pirate's Bounty: Grade I winner Private Persuasion (1991), Del Mar stakes winner Sound Wisdom (1992), grandam of Denis of Cork and Torchera (1993), dam of Da' Tara.


She’s Outrageous wins Ingrid Knotts Stakes

In her first start following an 11-month layoff, She’s Outrageous,
won the 6 furlong $32,790 Ingrid Knotts Stakes at Arapahoe Park
on May 31 by three lengths. The Colorado homebred is the sixth
stakes winner produced from Tribal Rule’s first crop.

Tribal Rule is now represented by nine stakes winners and seven
stakes-placed from his first two crops (25% from starters), including
3-year-old Heavens Gold, second in the $50,000 Aspen Cup
Handicap on June 1.


Valiant Effort never headed in $62,816 allowance

In the May 30 feature race at Hollywood Park, Valiant Effort
set fractions of :22 4/5, :44 4/5 and 1:08 2/5 for a final time of
1:20 4/5, two-fifths off the track record for 7 furlongs.
The 5-year-old son of Bertrando has finished first or second
in 8 of 10 starts on dirt/synthetics.


Productive holiday weekend for Tribal Rule!

As the 8-5 favorite in the feature race at Churchill Downs on
May 25th, Indian Ashton set fractions of :22, :44 4/5 and
:56 4/5 on his way to a length victory at 5 furlongs on the turf.
Defeated a head in the California Sprint Championship (NTR)
earlier this year, Indian Ashton has won 5 of 11 starts and
$208,198 on dirt and turf.

In other Memorial Day weekend action, Tribal Rule 3-year-old
Mr. Golden Ruler was second in the $50,000 Norgor Derby
at Ruidoso and Tribal Justice rallied from 11th in a starter
allowance at Hollywood Park for his second win in 4 starts.


Bertrando filly wins by 10 1/4 lengths at Woodbine.

As the 3-2 favorite, Fortune Rose took the early lead and was
never headed throughout the 1 1/16 miles, banking $40,067 for
owner Stronach Stables in her only start. A $130,000 Keeneland
September yearling purchase, Fortune Rose is a half-sister to
Grade I winner Flirteador (Arg) and Grade I placed Flager (Arg).


Back-to-back wins for promising Bertrando 3-year-old

The only Cal-bred in a field of seven, Liberian Freighter (pictured) posted a wire-to-wire victory in $66,520 open allowance company as the favorite at Hollywood Park on May 18th, defeating older horses in time of 1:40 2/5 for the 1 1/16 miles. The full brother to stakes winner Frankelstein has won 3 of 6 starts for earnings of $121,220.



Stella Mark defeats Grade I winner in stakes debut!

Stalking the pace, Stella Mark launched his bid three-wide entering
the stretch and pulled away to a 1 1/2 length victory in the $150,000
Tiznow Stakes defeating graded winners Johnny Eves (G1) and
Notional (G2). His time for the 7 1/2 furlongs was 1:27, only one-fifth
over the track record set by Greg’s Gold last year.



Benchmark ranks second among California sires
by 2008 progeny earnings

The top weight in a field of 12, Benchmark 4-year-old Stella Mark (pictured)
rallied four wide in the stretch to win a $69,260 allowance in open company
at Santa Anita on April 12. The victory - his fourth around two turns - boosted
his bankroll to $171,276 in 13 starts.

Benchmark is one of only two sires with seven-figure California-bred earnings
in 2008.


Bertrando sires 46th stakes winner

In his second start following a 33 month absence from the races,
Frankelstein (pictured) set all the fractions to win Santa Anita’s
$56,500 March Madness Starter Handicap on March 30 at one mile
by nearly two lengths.

A top three finisher in 11 of 13 lifetime starts on dirt and turf at Santa
Anita and Hollywood Park, Frankelstein has earned $161,160.

 


Game run by Idiot Proof in Dubai’s Golden Shaheen-G1

Breaking from post 14 in the $2 million straightway dash, Idiot Proof
(pictured inside) surged for the early lead, lost then regained his advantage
mid-race but could not withstand the late charge of Benny the Bull
(pictured outside). In their previous meeting, Idiot Proof defeated Benny
the Bull by just over four lengths while finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup
Sprint-G1 last Fall.

The 4-year-old son of Benchmark bred and raised at River Edge Farm, has
won or placed in 11 of 12 starts for earnings of $1,263,204 and he joins
Brother Derek
as their sire’s second seven-figure earner.


Sierra Sunset runs big at Oaklawn

Second to Denis of Cork in the 8-furlong Southwest Stakes-G3,
Sierra Sunset appeared ready for a “breakout race” in the $300,000
Rebel Stakes-G2 at 1 1/16 miles and he delivered with a 3-length win
in 1:43 4/5, 4/5 faster than Curlin’s clocking of 1:44 3/5 last year.

The Rebel was the third stakes win for the son of Bertrando who was
a $40,000 yearling purchase from River Edge Farm’s 2006 Northern
California yearling consignment. The $180,000 he earned for the win
boosted his earnings to $428,696.

Third consecutive graded win for Georgie Boy

Georgie Boy passed his first two-turn test with flying colors in the
$200,000 San Felipe Stakes-G2. Sent off as the 7-5 favorite, the
son of Tribal Rule overcame traffic problems in mid-stretch, swinging
to the outside and running the final sixteenth in 5 4/5 seconds for a final
time of 1:42 1/5 on the synthetic track.

No worse than third in seven starts, Georgie Boy has won four stakes
and $496,806 for owner/breeder George Schwary.

Tribesman takes Phoenix Gold Cup

Left alone on the lead, Tribesman set fractions of :21.30, :43.17 and :54.96
to win easily by 1 3/4 lengths in excellent time of 1:07.80. The $100,000
Turf Paradise feature was the second stakes victory and fifth consecutive win
for the Tribal Rule gelding who boasts a record of 6-0-2 in 10 starts and
earnings of $223,281.

Georgie Boy sets new stakes record in San Vicente

In his first start since winning the September 5 Del Mar Futurity-G1,
top-weighted Georgie Boy took command in the stretch and drew
off to a facile 3 1/4 length victory in the 67th running of Santa Anita’s
San Vicente Stakes-G2. He zipped the final furlong in :11 1/5 and
established a new stakes record of 1:20, a full second faster than
the previous record of 1:21 set by Ancient Title in 1973.

Third California Champion for Benchmark

Mr. and Mrs. Martin J. Wygod’s Eclipse Award finalist and
Grade I winner Idiot Proof ($843,204) was named 2007
champion California-bred 3-year-old and champion sprinter
by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association.
Benchmark is also the sire of previous California champions
Brother Derek ($1,593,458) and Don’tsellmeshort ($402,365).


Tribal Rule sires 2-year-old Champion

Tribal Rule’s Del Mar Futurity-G1 winner Georgie Boy was
voted California-bred champion 2-year-old male of 2007.
The $286,806 juvenile earner from his sire’s second crop also
won the Graduation Stakes (pictured) as a maiden and was
second in the Best Pal Stakes-G2 in five starts at two.
Congratulations to owner/breeder George Schwary and
trainer Kathy Walsh.


Final Fling earns Graded Win in Stakes Debut

In her fourth start and first around two-turns, Final Fling caught
Grade I-placed Grace Anatomy in deep stretch to win the $108,900
Santa Ysabel Stakes-G3 by just over a length defeating fillies by
Aldebaran, Dynaformer, Deputy Minister and Empire Maker.

The California-bred 3-year-old daughter of Grade 2-placed multiple stakes
winner Lily La Belle is the 45th stakes winner and ninth Graded winner
for Bertrando. Congratulations to breeder William Peeples, owner Michael
House and trainer Jeff Mullins.


Fourth Consecutive win for Tribesman

In his first start since winning the November 23 Sausalito Stakes and
setting the Tapeta track record of 1:08.32, Tribesman notched his fourth
consecutive victory on January 13 winning a $47,500 allowance wire-to-wire
at Golden Gate in 1:08.34. The first-crop son of Tribal Rule has now won five
of nine starts and $163,281.

New Stakes Winner for Tribal Rule

Winner of his 2-year-old debut November 30 defeating a field of
Cal-bred maidens on Hollywood Park's Cushion Track, Italian Rules
stepped up to open stakes company on January 5th at Golden Gate
and won the $65,000 Stinson Beach Stakes (pictured) in 1:09 2/5.
Congratulations to owner/breeder Nick Cafarchia and trainer Mark Glatt.


Benchmark 3-Year Idiot Proof is 2007 Eclipse Award
Finalist for Champion Male Sprinter

Grade I winner and Breeders' Cup Sprint runner-up Idiot Proof
is the only 2007 Eclipse Award finalist sired by a California-based
stallion. Bred and raised at River Edge Farm, the son of Benchmark
out of the Bertrando mare Perfectly Pretty, is one of three Eclipse
Award finalists bred by Marty and Pam Wygod, who are finalists
for the 2007 champion breeder award.

 


Bertrando tops California's sire list by money won

The leading sire in California for the second time in three years, Bertrando
concluded 2007 with progeny earnings of $4,235,168 - $437,349 ahead of
his closest competitor. Additionally, Bertrando was the leader among the
state's sires by Cal-bred stakes winners (8) and dam sire earnings.


13 two-year-old winners for Benchmark in 2007

On December 21st, Hollywood Park maiden special weight debut winner
Waafi (pictured) became Benchmark's 13th two-year-old winner of 2007.
Congratulations to owner/breeder Janavar Thoroughbreds and trainer
Marty Jones.


With his second crop to race, Tribal Rule is
California's leading sire of 2-year-olds

Represented by 11 two-year-olds winners from 23 starters, 25% wins from
starts and juvenile earnings of $605,944 in 2007, Tribal Rule is the fourth
River Edge Farm stallion to lead California's 2-year-old sire list.

The leading California freshman sire of 2006 and top second crop sire of
2007, Tribal Rule ranked 14th nationally among the leading second crop
sires of 2007 with lifetime earnings of $1,944,894.
